In 799, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne and proclaimed him as Emperor of Romans as a tactic to bring peace to Rome. The ceremony was significant because it represented the ideal of a united Christian community and established a connection between the Roman Catholic Church and the empire.

During the Middle ages, the Holy Roman Empire was Catholic. However, throughout its history it faced many religious conflicts. Most of these were between the emperor and the pope.
The Crusades
One of these conflicts included the Crusades, that fought the Muslim Turks. A crusade is a holy war. There were eight crusades that spanned about 200 years. It was fought over the holy land of Jerusalem. It ended in 1291, here the Muslims emerged victorious.
